My Favorite Eco-Friendly Dishwasher Detergent
I've tried a few different eco-friendly automatic dishwashing detergents so far, and this is my favorite out of all of them. It gets the dishes cleaner than any of the others I've tried, and I like that it doesn't contain harsh chemicals or added scents. And perhaps best of all, it's cruelty-free.
I rinse any heavy food debris from my dishes before loading them into the dishwasher (which you should be doing regardless of what kind of detergent you use, just for the sake of keeping your machine running smoothly and preventing issues with the plumbing lines), and they all come out very clean.
I buy this detergent at my local grocery store and it's a few dollars cheaper than the list price here on Amazon, so you may want to shop around for the best price.

Works as promised - and better for the environment
As a family, we do what we can to reduce our footprint. Recycling and conserving are the obvious, but after buying a home with a septic system, our strategy expanded. We realized how many chemicals were going down our drains from the shower, clothes washer and dishwasher. On a recent trip to the store, I purchased several Seventh Generation products.
Even if one ingredient from one of their products (a non-biodegradable polymer in the case of SG dishwashing gel) is not as environmentally-friendly as (previously) claimed, the benefits still heavily outweigh using traditional dishwashing detergents. For not vetting a few of their products' ingredients more carefully...I'll give this product a 4 out of an otherwise 5-star rating.
I read the instructions on the box regarding using with hard water. It requires filling both the main reservoir and the pre-wash area. After reading consumer reviews, we followed the suggestion to use a rinse agent...which I usually use...
